HMS Tranquility sailed from Spithead, England on December 2, 1787, manned by Captain Michael Hayward and a crew of 52 hardy souls bound for Polynesia. Their mission: collect exceptional Polynesian goods and commodities from the remote South Pacific islands, retrieving them for the luxury and amusement of King George III.

Just over a year later, Tranquility was fully loaded and headed for home. Then, on the morning of April 1, 1789, the crew unexpectedly sailed the HMS Tranquility off-course to an isolated region of the South Pacific, anchoring just off uncharted Ooh-Ga-Boo-Ga Island.

There, thanks to the abundance of their South Pacific treasure troves, they quickly established a settlement a trading post and a commonwealth that still exists to this day.
